After painting a rough outline of the winding Cumberland River and Nashville skyline in the distance, I will paint the sky today. I will start with the sky since it is the most distant visual element in the composition. The sky tends to become naturally lighter near the horizon, so I am mixing in more Titanium White to lighten those areas. Since this is an overcast nocturnal scene, much of the sky should be light to suggest the reflection of the city lights on the clouds. The sky is painted very quickly to give only a suggestion of color and value shifts near the horizon line.
